Abstract:

Several years of experiments with iron smelting has revealed the whole process from roasting of ore and the extraction of iron to the purification and smithing of the finished iron. This year iron will be extracted from ore from Højby in Odsherred on Zealand and iron that was extracted previously will be smithed into replicas of Iron Age tools. Throughout the whole process samples will be taken in order to follow the physical and chemical changes from ore to slag and tool. The aim is to get an idea of how large the iron production from a single farm was in the Iron Age.
