Abstract:

With a starting point in a Northern German monk’s account “De diversis artibus”, which describes the craft of the bronze caster, an attempt will be made to reconstruct a bronze smelting furnace from the Middle Ages. One of the uses of bronze was for the production of jewellery. The furnace functions with the aid of chimney draught and this saves some of the work involved in working bellows. The furnace will be reconstructed according to the old written source and will then be tested in practice.
