Abstract:

This experiment aims to investigate the wear traces found on tools of Killiaq rock from the Western Greenlandic Saqqaq culture (2500-900 BC). Scrapers were the type of tool used. This tool type was chosen because it is relatively easy to analyse as the active edge is already known. A total of 32 experiments were carried out. The materials worked comprised fresh hide, dry hide, re-soaked hide and bird skin, plus bone, bone with meat, antler and dry wood. The time expended for each individual tool was noted and is included in an analysis of the temporal development of the individual polishes.

The tools will be analysed for wear traces, after which they will form the basis for an analysis of artefact material from the Saqqaq culture.
